Zinc toxicology following particulate inhalation
ثبت نشده
چکیده
The current mini-review describes the toxic effects of zinc inhalation principally in the workplace and associated complications with breathing and respiration. The International ClassiÞ cation of Functioning, Disability and Health Criteria were used to speciÞ cally select articles. Most of the commercial production of zinc involves the galvanizing of iron and the manufacture of brass. The recommended daily allowance for adults is 15 mg zinc/ day. Metal fume fever associated with inhalation of fumes of ZnO is characterized by fatigue, chills, fever, myalgias, cough, dyspnea, leukocytosis, thirst, metallic taste and salivation. ZnCl2 inhalation results in edema in the alveolar surface and the protein therein the lavage ß uid is elevated. Particular pathological changes associated with zinc intoxication include: pale mucous membranes; jaundice; numerous Heinz bodies; and marked anemia. Adequate ambient air monitors for permissible exposure limits, excellent ventilation and extraction systems, and approved respirators are all important in providing adequate protection.

Particles emitted from indoor combustion sources: size distribution measurement and chemical analysis.
This study is primarily focused toward measuring the particle size distribution and chemical analysis of particulate matter that originates from combustion sources typically found in Indian urban homes. Four such sources were selected: cigarette, incense stick, mosquito coil, and dhoop, the latter being actually a thick form of incense stick. Altogether, seven of the most popular brands availab...

A plethora of epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to elevated levels of ambient particulate matter (PM) can lead to adverse health outcomes, including cardiopulmonary-related mortality. Subsequent animal toxicological studies have attempted to mimic these cardiovascular and respiratory responses, in order to better understand underlying mechanisms. However, it is difficult to quant...
متن کاملNanoparticles: a review of particle toxicology following inhalation exposure.
It is expected that the rapid expansion of nanotechnology will bring many potential benefits. However, initial investigations have demonstrated that nanomaterials may adversely affect human health and the environment. By increasing the application of nanoparticles, protection of the human respiratory system from exposure to airborne nanoparticles and ultrafine particulates has become an emergin...
متن کاملEffects of inhaled ambient particulate matter on pulmonary antimicrobial immune defense.
Respiratory-tract infection, specifically pneumonia, contributes substantially to the increased morbidity and mortality among elderly individuals exposed to airborne particulate matter of <10 microm diameter (PM(10)). These epidemiological findings suggest that PM(10) may act as an immunosuppressive factor that can undermine normal pulmonary antimicrobial defense mechanisms. To investigate whet...
متن کاملEvaluating the toxicity of airborne particulate matter and nanoparticles by measuring oxidative stress potential--a workshop report and consensus statement.
BACKGROUND There is a strong need for laboratory in vitro test systems for the toxicity of airborne particulate matter and nanoparticles. The measurement of oxidative stress potential offers a promising way forward. OBJECTIVES A workshop was convened involving leading workers from the field in order to review the available test methods and to generate a Consensus Statement. DISCUSSIONS Work...
